The projects developed by IPE in the Pontal do Paranapanema have shown that it is possible to integrate disparate segments of the community in effective conservation. When work with the black lion tamarin began twenty years ago, researchers believed that simply having a deep understanding of their biology the species could be saved from extinction. However, it soon became evident that a broader approach, one balancing conservation and sustainable development, would be needed to save the tamarin and its habitat.
IPÊ's actions have been undertaken with the help of participative approaches and discussions of shared challenges through broad environmental education programs, adaptive management, constant monitoring, landscape planning and influencing of public policy.
In this way IPÊ has established an efficient model in the Pontal that benefits both humans and native forests. This has been used, with pertinent adaptations, in all regions that IPE works today, where effectiveness is achieved through long-term involvement with the local communities.
