The Fishing and Mariculture project was launched in 2001. Its main objective is to promote the conservation of habitats and of marine and terrestrial fauna and flora near the Superagüi National Park, by means of a rational and sustainable management of natural resources.
This project values the traditional practices and culture of the communities living around the Park. IPÊ's main activities include research, which seeks a fishery management, and the establishment and development of mariculture as a sustainable economic practice for the communities that live around the Park (Barra do Superagüi, Bertioga, Tibicanga, Guapicum, Laranjeiras, and Vila das Peças). Activities have adopted a participatory approach so all can feel included in the new activities being introduced.
Concurrently, IPÊ is carrying out other important actions, such as:
| |
Conducting participatory diagnosis of fishing activities to better understand the dynamics of small scale fishing and to generate funding to manage fisheries, assuring the survival of the communities involved and the conservation of marine and forest ecosystems; |
| |
Mapping of fisheries to identify the main species caught and the respective conflicts of use; |
| |
Encouraging community organization, supporting local associations; |
| |
Fishermen's qualification through meetings, workshops and partnerships; |
| |
Supporting and making it easier for fishermen to obtain their Professional Fisherman Identification Cards and Vessel Registrations at the Special Secretary of Aquaculture and Fishing - SEAP; |
| |
Encouraging discussions among different local actors to resolve conflicts and foster participant fisheries management. |
