Suzana Padua
President and Co-founder of IPÊ

Masters in Education and Biodiversity from the University of Florida in Orlando and Doctorate in Sustainable Development from the Unidersidade de Brasília (2003). One of the most respected professionals in environmental education, Suzana strives to raise the environmental awareness of communities about the effects of deforestation. In 2002, she was one of the finalists for the Cláudia Prize in recognition of her work with protecting endangered species and her involvement with environmental causes.

Claudio Valladares Padua
Scientific Director and Co-founder of IPÊ

Bachelors in Biology and Business Management and Doctorate in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Florida in Gainesville. Claudio was formerly professor in the Department of Forest Engineering at the Universidade de Brasilia. He is currently a senior research associate at the Center for Environmental Research and Conservation at Columbia University (CERC) and international director of conservation at Wildlife Trust, both located in New York. He is one of the founders and coordinators of activities at Wildlife Trust Alliance and vice-president of conservation for the International Primatological Society. Between 1997 and 2004 he won six conservation awards, both nationally and internationally. He has written two books and has had more than 30 works published in national and international scientific journals.

Laury Cullen Junior
Scientific Researcher and Coordinator of Research

Bachelors in Forest Engineering from the Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz - ESALQ - USP, Masters in Conservation Biology from the University of Florida, and currently a doctoral student at the University of Kent, England. Larry's research is focused on the ecology of large mammals, the conservation and restoration of fragmented landscapes, and community involvement. He has published more than 30 articles in national and international publications and is a fellow of the Ashoka Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs. Among the numerous awards received for his work are the Whitley Gold Award (2002), granted by Princess Anna of England and considered the "Oscar" of environmental conservation, and the Rolex Enterprise Award (2004).

Eduardo Humberto Ditt
Scientific Researcher and Coordinator of Research

Bachelors in Agricultural Engineering, Masters in Environmental Science from the Universidade de São Paulo, and currently a doctoral student at Imperial College, in England. Eduardo coordinates research and conservation projects in the Atlantic Forest, including identification of priority areas for conservation, investigation of fragmented landscapes, management of scientific information to assist in the creation of landscape planning-related public policy, project planning for carbon sequestration in conjunction with activities that provide environmental restoration and sustainable use and occupation of soil, and development of conservation biology courses. He is the author of the book "Forest Fragments in the Pontal do Paranapanema." Since 1999, he has been a Fellow in the Lead - Leadership Program for the Environment and Development.

Maria das Graças de Souza
Project Coordinator for Environmental Education

Bachelors in Biological Sciences from the Unesp de Assis - SP and Masters in Environmental Science from the Universidade de São Carlos. Gracinha coordinates IPÊ's environmental education projects and since 1991 has worked as an environmental educator for various projects developed by the institute, principally in the Pontal do Paranapanema. She coordinated the second course on environmental capacity-building for professors, "Environmental Education and Sustainable Development," and participated in two courses in conservation biology and wildlife management for Latin Americans that addressed "The Role of Environmental Education in the Conservation of Ecosystems." She also coordinates the orientation of environmental education assistants at IPÊ.

Cristiana Saddy Martins
Veterinarian and Primate Project Coordinator

Degree in Veterinary Science from UFRuRJ and Masters and Doctorate in Ecology from Unicamp/SP. Cristiana has been with IPÊ since 1992. Currently, she coordinates the Black Lion Tamarin Project in the Pontal do Paranapanema (SP) and the Black-faced Lion Tamarin Project in Superagüi (PR).

Patrícia Médici
Tapir Project Coordinator

Bachelors in Forest Engineering from the Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz - ESALQ - USP; Masters in Ecology, Conservation, and Management of Wildlife from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais; and currently a doctoral student. Patricia develops projects for the conservation of Atlantic Forest, utilizing the tapir as an ecological indicator in the Pontal do Paranapanema. In addition, she currently studies the influence of large herbivores on the diversity and structure of the Atlantic Forest.

Clarice Bassi
Project Coordinator for the Conservation and Status of the Manatee Project in ESEC Anavilhanas

Bachelors in Biology from the Universidade Metodista de Piracicaba and Masters in Ecology from the Universidade de São Paulo - USP. Clarice participated in the project "Forest Remnants of the Planalto Ocidental de São Paulo" and in the third national course on conservation biology and management of wildlife, and helped coordinate the first Latin American course in conservation biology and wildlife management.

Flávia Souza Rocha
Small Mammals Project Coordinator

Bachelors in Biology and Masters in Ecology from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Flávia coordinates the small mammals project in the Pontal do Paranapanema, whose objectives are to understand the effects of habitat fragmentation on small mammal communities, restore the landscape, and conserve the species. She has been at IPÊ since 2001 but been researching these species since 1994.

Alessandra Nava
Conservation Medicine Coordinator – Indicator Species

Degree in Veterinary Science from UNIMAR (Universidade de Marília) and currently a doctoral student. Alessandra began working with IPÊ in 1999 as a assistant and today coordinates the Conservation Medicine Program for the Pontal do Paranapanema. She dedicates herself to the study of interactions between the health of wild animal populations, domestic animals that live close to the forests, and humans, integrating conservation objectives into this study. She was an instructor for the Latin American course in conservation biology and conservation medicine, realized by IPÊ in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution, in addition to being the veterinarian responsible for monitoring the chemical levels of jaguars and ocelots in the Ecological Indicators Project.

Alexandre Uezu
Bird Project Coordinator

Bachelors in Biological Science and Masters in Ecology from the Universidade de São Paulo – USP, and currently a doctoral student.  Alexandre coordinates research on the effects of fragmentation on birds in the Pontal do Paranapanema and is responsible for GSI (Geographical Information Systems) work at the institute.

Alexandre Túlio Amaral do Nascimento
Black-fronted Titi Monkey Project Coordinator

Bachelors in Biology from the Universidade Federal de Viçosa (MG) with a specialization in conservation biology and currently a Masters student in Ecological Studies. Alexandre has been at IPÊ since 1999 when he worked as a research assistant on the Black-faced Lion Tamarin Project. In 2002 he was incorporated into the nucleus of the group studying this species and today is responsible for the project's database. He coordinates the "Every Monkey on His Branch" project that studies the titi monkeys and marmosets and their interaction with their habitat in the Nazaré Paulista region.

Jefferson Ferreira Lima
Coffee with Forest Project Coordinator

Bachelors in Geography and Ranching and currently a Masters student in Agroecology and Rural Sustainable Development at the Universidade Internacional de Andalucia (Spain). Jefferson coordinates the "Coffee with Forest" project in the Pontal do Paranapanema. He developed projects for the preservation and recuperation of forest remnants and was also responsible for implementing the Green Hug project and for monitoring the following projects: Diversity Islands, Agro-forest Garden School, and Community Gardens.

José Eduardo Lozano Badialli
Masters in Environmental Science and Amazon Sustainability from the Universidade Federal do Amazonas.

José coordinates the activities of IPÊ in Manaus, Amazônia, where IPÊ maintains an agreement of technical cooperation with IBAMA on the Anavilhanas Ecological Station.  Currently, he is developing initiatives for strengthening institutional structure in the region, as well as activities directed towards the local communities in the area surrounding the Ecological Station, emphasizing research on alternatives for socio-environmental development.  He has been at IPÊ since 1995 when he participated in the project “Knowledge Agenda.”

Andréa Imperador Peçanha Travassos
Institutional Development Manager

Bachelors in Biology and Teaching with a specialization in Environmental Science from the Universidade São Francisco. Andréa has been at IPÊ since 1997 when she collaborated on the project "Knowledge Agenda," a sustainable development proposal for the Nazaré Paulista region. In 1999, she assumed administrative coordination of the organization and began involvement with inquiries related to the third sector and institutional development. She participated in the Getúlio Vargas Foundation's course "Administration for the Third Sector" and in a course on management development for environmental NGOs provided by the International Center for Environmental NGO Capacity Building in Paraguay, with the support of the Avina Foundation.

Patrícia Paranaguá
CBBC Coordinator

Bachelors in Forest Engineering with a specialization in Environmental Management and a Masters in Environmental Engineering Science. Patrícia worked with IMAZON (Institute for Man and the Environment in Amazônia) as a researcher and coordinator of the Sustainable Cities Project between 2001 and 2003. Currently, she is academic coordinator of the Brazilian Center for Conservation Biology at IPÊ.
